Rabbi Batsheva Appel
“and Abraham came to eulogize Sarah and to week for her” Genesis 23:2 Rabbeinu Bachya comments on this verse, “…Abraham roused himself from his shock in order to eulogize Sarah.” We understand all this comment all too well this week as we are in shock as we eulogize and mourn those who died in Pittsburgh this past Shabbat. We are not the primary mourners, but we feel their loss keenly.
Rabbeinu Bachya continues his comment noting that rather than saying “to eulogize her and to weep for her”, the Torah mentions her name. Why? We already know for whom we weep. Because it is the custom to mention again and again the names of those we eulogize.
We remember the names of those who died last Shabbat:
Zichronam livracha. May the memory of their lives always be for blessing.
