Why I LOVE THIS RECIPE: When I was a child and still at home, I always remember my mother making a mocha tarte, but only on Shabbat and other special occasions. Although there is no specific memory that comes to mind with this recipe, I remember that my siblings and I would always beg my mother to make it, but she would only do it for special occasions. I remember it was delicious every time I had it, and my father especially loved it. It always brought my family together, and it was a treat I would constantly look forward to. This recipe reminds me of my childhood and family when I lived at home. I have not had a mocha tarte as good since.

Two White Cakes
1 cup white sugar
½ cup butter
2 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1½ cups flour
1¾ teaspoons baking powder
½ cup milk

Preheat oven to 350° F and grease and flour pan (9 x 9 inch).

Combine sugar and butter in a bowl.

Beat the eggs, then stir in vanilla in another bowl.

Combine flour and baking powder with sugar and butter, then pour in eggs and vanilla, and stir until smooth.

Bake for 35 minutes.

Once cake comes out and is cool, slice off the very top, and cut the cake in half length-wise.

Whipped Cream
1 cup heavy whipping cream
2 tablespoons sugar
½ teaspoon vanilla

Put a bowl in fridge or freezer until it is cold.

Pour ingredients together in the bowl and whisk until fluffy.

Mocha Flavoring
1 cup of water
1 cup of sugar
½ cup of cocoa powder
3 tablespoons instant coffee powder

Heat ingredients in a large sauce pan and boil.
Whisk ingredients together, stirring frequently. Cool and transfer to a container.

Line the top of one half of the cake with mocha flavoring, and the bottom of the other half.

Put the whipped cream in between the halves, place on top of one another, and enjoy!
