Secular Humanist Jewish Circle Lecture, "Jews in China" @ Nanini LIbrary | Tucson | Arizona | United States

Imagine attending a Jewish service in China!!
Rabbi Sam Cohon of Tucson who served as the
High Holy Days rabbi for Kehilat Shanghai in Shanghai, China,
will share his insights about his experience there.
Saturday, May 18, 2019, 1:30-3
Nanini Library, 7300 N Shannon Rd., Tucson 85741
The Jewish community of Shanghai, China, the largest
and one of the most important cities in the entire world,
has gone through three distinct periods.
Learn the fascinating history of the first two of these Jewish communities: the Baghdadi founders of the Bund and the source of much of Shanghai’s original success and then the famed “Shanghai Ghetto” Jews of Central and Eastern Europe who found a safe haven during the Holocaust in the wide-open port city so far from their homes and cultures
even after it was occupied by Japan.
That era ended with Mao’s communist takeover of China.
For the majority of the talk, Rabbi Cohon will explore the fascinating and flourishing Jewish community of Shanghai today, its diversity and vitality and the complexity of living in a giant, powerful nation that is officially atheistic and in which
Judaism is not even recognized as a religion.
