4 Israeli artists brighten the Tucson Community

During their visit to Tucson, these 4 Israeli artists brought a fresh perspective of Jewish culture with an Israeli flavor to the local community through various events.  At each one, they shared with the participants stories of their lives, their art, and Israel.

The concept of this program was a vision of Diane Weintraub, who wished very much to have a program with real personal connections between Tucson and our partnership communities in Israel.

Over A Decade of Caring

The TIPS Partnership is at the heart of the relationship between Tucson, Israel, Phoenix and Seattle. TIPS brings together volunteers from these Jewish federations with the people of Kiryat Malachi and Hof Ashkelon to develop one of Israel’s most economically challenged regions. more

About Kiryat Malachi
Kiryat Malachi is located between Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Beersheva.
Approximately 22,000 residents live in 5,000 households. In the last two decades, more than 10,000 immigrants have arrived from Ethiopia, the Former Soviet Union and Argentina. more
About Hof Ashkelon
Hof Ashkelon is a regional consortium of 19 Kibbutzim and Moshavim (cooperative settlements consisting of small separate farms) located around Kiryat Malachi and bordering the Gaza Strip. Hof Ashkelon is home to approximately 13,000 residents living in 2,300 households.
Many of the region’s newest residents were relocated from Gaza, as a result of the unilateral disengagement from the Israeli settlements.
The difficult security situation and economic depression in the region have had a major impact. In the aftermath of the Summer 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah and the unilateral pullout of Israeli settlements from Gaza, missiles from Gaza into Hof Ashkelon have been, at times, a daily occurrence. Government budget cuts and an increase in the number of residents needing welfare assistance present an additional strain. However, by working together we can create a brighter future for our partnership region.

Federation partners have provided several million dollars of support over the past decade.more

TIPS Blog site

We have set up a TIPS blog to publicize activities relating to TIPS in our region. The purpose is to share information with the Jewish communities in Tucson, Phoenix, and Seattle as well as all steering committee members. It can include information on projects as well  information on visits  to Kiryat Malachi and/or Hof Ashkelon. Ideally, the articles will have a lot of pictures and not too much writing.

Updates from Hof Ashkelon

Pictures from the trip of 100 kids from Hof Ashkelon.  These pictures are from the tiyul to the Galil of 100 students of the Shikma School in Yad Mordechai.  The kids who come from Kibbutz Karmia, Zikim, and Yad Mordechai live in areas targeted by kassams.  This trip was subsidized by a donation from the Phoenix Federation in order to relieve the stress and strain of the daily security situation.  The staff and children are extremely grateful and will write letters of thanks in the next few days. What Volunteers have to say

Making a Difference
For over eleven years, the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle has participated in a Jewish Agency for Israel  program called Partnership 2000 (P2K).  Together with other Federations in the Western United States, we have been partnered with the development town of Kiryat Malachi and the Hof Ashkelon Regional Council, a rural area of 20 communities from just north of the Gaza Strip.  This program is different from past ones linking us to communities in Israel because in addition to providing funds for much needed projects, we also have created ways for Israelis and Americans to be together and learn from each other.....

From our Schaliach at the Israel Center

I would like to share the attached slideshow with you to provide a better understanding of why Tucson and other communities have formed a partnership with the troubled and fragile areas of Hof Ashkelon and Kiryat Malachi.
This slideshow was created by a woman whose family lives in the Moshav of Netiv Ha’asara, a settlement close to the Gaza border in the Hof Ashkelon region.  It gives a personal look into what life is like for this community, and reinforces to us why it is so important to continue our support and partnership.

Imagine being a 16-year-old living in Israel five miles from the border with Gaza in Hof Ashkelon or Kiryat Malachi, a region that has been partnered with the Jewish communities of Tucson, Phoenix, and Seattle for the past ten years.  Hamas, the terrorist organization that has assumed complete control of the Gaza Strip, continues to call for the destruction of all Israel.  Through your time and generosity, you can touch the lives of individuals and families young and old, in this fragile region and in turn be touched by the warmth and energy of our Israeli
